The largest identified star in the known universe is VY Canis Majoris, a hypergiant of the constellation Canis Major, calculated to be more than 1,540 times larger than the sun. YV Canis Majoris is situated 5,000 light years away from earth and is probably far from the largest star in the galaxy.

There may be many stars significantly larger in the Milky Way that are hidden from view and as yet unobserved by scientists. Latest theories suggest the largest possible size for any star in the universe is 2,600 times greater than the size of the sun.
