According to the University of Michigan’s Department of Zoology, each of the three living zebra species is a member of the genus Equus. Accordingly, the binomial nomenclature for Burchell’s zebra is Equus burchelli, while the binomial name of Grevy’s zebra is Equus grevyi. The mountain zebra’s binomial is Equus zebra.
These three zebra species are large herbivores that inhabit the southern half of the African continent. Formerly, a fourth zebra species shared this range as well. Known as the quagga, the species’ binomial is Equus quagga. The last living member of the species died in Holland’s Amsterdam Zoo, in August of 1883.
