What are bioptic telescopes used for?

Bioptic telescopes are used to help people with low vision perform functions such as driving by attaching the device to their current prescription glasses. Bioptic telescopes are intended for the visually impaired whose visual acuity is between 20/40 to 20/400.

These patients can see well enough to drive with their current prescriptions but cannot make out details or read signs at great distances. The device is permanently mounted to the patient’s current prescription lens off axis so, when needed, it allows the patient to use the entire field of vision. Drivers are able to engage the telescopic view by moving their head or eye slightly.
