At least 300 bird species are found throughout West Virginia at various times of the year, including eagles, hawks, warblers, hummingbirds, woodpeckers and ducks. While many are present only from late spring through summer, as many as 50 species stay to endure the winter months.

Bald eagles, golden eagles and red-tail hawks are commonly seen in West Virginia. The state's forests are home to songbirds, such as cerulean and golden-winged warblers. The ruby-throated hummingbird is seen in flower gardens, and various woodpecker species are found in oak trees. The Canada goose, wood duck, black duck and mallard are several of the waterfowl especially common near the Ohio River.
