The West Virginia state flag has a dark blue border surrounding a white field. A picture in the center of the flag sits below a red banner with the words "State of West Virginia" in black and features two men, one representing agriculture and the other representing mining.

Between the two men sits a rock with the date West Virginia attained statehood: June 20, 1863. Located below the men are two rifles with a red "Liberty Cap" on top. Underneath is another red banner with the words "Montani Semper Liberi," which means "Mountaineers are always free." A rhododendron wreath is around the picture.

Adopted on March 7, 1929, this flag followed several other flags flown over West Virginia since it joined the Union. A pledge to this state flag was adopted on Feb. 8, 1977.
