Do you bleed when the hymen is broken?

According to the U.K. National Health Service (NHS), a woman does bleed when her hymen breaks, but the bleeding is not necessarily significant enough to be noticeable. The breaking of the hymen does not necessarily lead to pain, either.
The NHS states that the hymen usually breaks when a woman has vaginal intercourse for the first time, if the hymen has not already broken due to athletic activity, tampon use, or other factors. Because the hymen breaks fairly easily and does not always do so in a noticeable manner, many women are not aware of their hymens being broken. Bleeding and pain can, but do not necessarily, accompany a woman's first penetrative sexual experience.
