Where do you find block numbers on a Chevy 350 engine?

The block identification number for small-block Chevrolet V-8 engines such as the Chevrolet 350 is commonly located on a flat pad on the front of the passenger side cylinder block. This pad is often not visible at first glance on an engine, as it is hidden by the alternator.

A typical block identification number for a Chevrolet 350 engine includes a letter indicating the site of manufacture, a numeric date of manufacture and an alphanumeric code indicating the engine's original application, such as powering a particular vehicle or range of vehicles. This portion of the code is known as the suffix code and usually cannot be interpreted without a reference to the suffix codes used by Chevrolet.
