Bluebells, or Mertensia virginica, bloom in March and April for a small time period, according to the Missouri Botanical Garden. They are hardy in USDA Hardiness Zones 3 to 8.
Bluebells have showy blue flowers that are trumpet-shaped and about 1 inch long. They prefer partial to fully-shaded conditions and have medium water needs. They are a clump-forming perennial that have blue-green leaves and pink flower buds that turn blue as they age.
A Bluebells plant generally requires low maintenance and experiences relatively few pest problems. They grow to approximately 2 feet and have a spread of less than 1.5 feet wide.
