What is a Bluetick Coonhound?

The bluetick coonhound is a dog that was developed in the United States to hunt raccoons. It gets its name for the dark blue ticking on the white areas on its short coat. Trackers prize the dog because it can pick up the scent of even an old trail.

The bluetick coonhound is descended from French hounds such as the Grand Bleu de Gascogne and other breeds such as the foxhound.

The dog stands between 20 and 27 inches at the shoulder and weighs between 45 and 80 pounds. It has long legs with tan markings. The muzzle also has tan markings, and the ears are pendulous.
