What is a tick hound?

The term "tick hound" can refer to the bluetick coon hound or the redtick coon hound, which are two distinct breeds of dogs. The official name of the redtick coon hound is the American English coon hound.

Both breeds of tick hounds are hunting dogs that thrive in the field chasing game. They both have a tendency to chase small animals unless they are trained to restrain themselves. For this reason, tick hounds may not be a good breed of dog for homes with smaller pets such as cats. Each breed is very energetic and must have regular exercise to stay happy. The American Kennel Club recognizes both breeds.
