Someone with an enlarged pancreas feels pancreatic pain in the upper abdomen, where the pancreas is located, states WebMD. While consuming food or drink, a person with pancreatitis may experience severe pain that radiates to the back. Positioned behind the stomach, the pancreatic gland manufactures enzymes that aid digestion.
Digestive enzymes move from the pancreas to the small intestine where they break down fat, carbohydrates and protein, according to WebMD. The gland also manufactures insulin, which moderates the body's primary energy source, glucose. When the enzymes in the pancreas begin to injure the gland, it is called pancreatitis. The condition can result in an enlarged pancreas.
