A boil is a skin condition that is caused by a bacterium called staphylococcus aureus. The bacterium is usually harmless, but causes an infection if it penetrates to the deeper tissues. Boils affect the hair follicles, as stated by Better Health Channel.
Symptoms of boils include tender and inflamed spot, fever, painful lump and pus. Boils may result from poor nutrition, broken skin, poor hygiene and diabetes. A person who is experiencing regular boils has diabetes that is not properly controlled. Boils should not be squeezed but should be left until they burst on their own. Antibiotics can be used to treat boils. Diabetes patients should seek further medication to help manage the condition.
