The Ten Commandments are first recorded in the Bible in the 20th chapter of the book of Exodus before being repeated in the fifth chapter of Deuteronomy. The Bible states that the Ten Commandments were given to Moses directly from God on two tablets of stone.
The Ten Commandments make up the foundation of Mosaic law. Laws in the Ten Commandments include a restriction on the worship of gods outside of the Christian god and prohibitions of theft, killing and adultery. The commandments also serve as the justification for the day of the Sabbath, which constitutes a day of rest.
