What are some breeds of police dogs?

German shepherds, Belgian Malinois, Labrador retrievers, Dutch shepherds and giant schnauzers are canine breeds used in police work. Police dogs chase and detain suspects. Police also threaten to release these dogs to prevent a suspect from performing some action that could cause harm to himself or the officers.

Some police departments use dogs to detect illicit substances, and use breeds such as the beagle, Basset hound, foxhound, Tervueren or the collie. These dogs frequently work in public transportation areas such as airports and train stations. The dogs sit with their handlers and sniff luggage and people for illegal drugs or explosive devices.
