Brine shrimp eat green algae by filtering water through their legs. Members of the order Anostraca, brine shrimp are small crustaceans that live in brine pools and other inland waters featuring high salinity.

Artemia salina is a species of brine shrimp found in the Great Salt Lake of Utah. Young brine shrimp hatch each April from cysts in the Great Salt Lake and are used as food in aquariums for fish and other animals. If conditions are favorable enough, a newly hatched brine shrimp can develop into adulthood in only eight days. However, most take three to six weeks to develop fully.
