The British ocean liner R.M.S. Lusitania was sunk by a German U-boat on May 7, 1915. The liner had been on a trip from New York City to Liverpool, England. Over 1,100 passengers and crew members died, including 120 American citizens.

Although President Woodrow Wilson had stated the United States would stay neutral during World War I, the sinking of the Lusitania changed Germany's perception among the American people. The liner had been carrying munitions, and Germany had used this fact as its reason behind the attack. After the attack, Germany apologized and restricted its U-boat attacks. By 1917, Germany ended its restrictions, prompting the United States to declare war on April 4, 1917.
