Which way is north?

North is the opposite direction of South and is in the general direction of the North Pole. North can be defined in several ways depending on methodology.

The exact direction of the pole itself is known as True North. The direction that a compass gives as North is slightly different and is known as Geomagnetic North. North as determined by a map is simply known as Grid North.

North is one of four cardinal directions. It's located halfway between its cardinal neighbors, East and West. It can be the polar opposite of the South Pole or just the opposite of South in general. However, regardless of specifics, it's always leading off toward the top of the two hemispheres.
