The brown bear eats shoots and grass in the spring, apples and berries in summer, and plums and nuts in the fall. The diet of the brown bear is omnivorous and consists of a seasonal diet based on whatever is available at the time.
Year round, bears eat insects, roots, reptiles and even mammals. Some foods are regionally consumed. For example, brown bears in the Canadian Rockies may eat elk or moose while the Alaskan brown bear may have a summertime feast of salmon.
Scientists say that there are around 200,000 brown bears worldwide, as of 2014. Half of those, or around 100,000, live in Russia.
