What is a bumblebee catfish?

The South American bumblebee catfish (Microglanis iheringi) is a vibrant-colored species native to the fast-flowing rivers of Venezuela. Its peaceful temperament and colorful appearance make it a popular addition to aquariums.

In tanks of at least 20 gallons, with 10 additional gallons for each accompanying bumblebee, the catfish grows up to 4 inches in length. Aquariums should feature lots of hiding places among driftwood, plants and rocks. A diet of sinking pellets, frozen and freeze-dried food is suitable. Due to its tendency to feed on fish tiny enough to fit into its mouth, it is important to avoid keeping the species with especially small tank mates.
