What is a burning bush shrub?

A burning bush shrub is a member of the Euonymus alatus family, whose leaves turn a bright crimson color in the fall. The color resembles a bush on fire, which is how the shrub derives its name.

The burning bush shrub grows to more than 15 feet high. In late spring, the bush has tiny flowers that turn into orange or red berries in the fall. Birds eat these berries and excrete them to other parts of the area, where they may start to grow.

These shrubs can grow as standalone plants, but often are used to form a hedge. When the burning bush is grown as a hedge, the branches can be trimmed into a shape or left alone to grow on their own.
