What causes rotten egg-tasting burps?

Egg burps are often called sulfur burps and are caused by the body expelling hydrogen sulfide gas. Hydrogen sulfide gas can by caused by certain proteins breaking down in the digestive system.

Egg burps can be caused by a person eating sulfa containing foods, such as red meat, coffee and dairy products. They may also be a sign of a gastrointestinal infection. In an infection, the burps might be accompanied by vomiting and diarrhea. Some prescription medication may cause sulfur burps. In some cases, these burps may be a sign of a more serious condition, such as, Crohn's disease, celiacs disease, irritable bowel syndrome or pancreatitis.
