What can you find in a UPIN registry?
By Forinfos - 05/03/2026 - 0 comments
The UPIN directory, which is now obsolete, contains information on medical practitioners who were enrolled in the Medicare Program, including their names, specialties, location codes and Medicare billing numbers. The Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services stopped updating the UPIN directory in June 2007.
The HIPAA legislation of 1996 mandated a new identification number, the NPI, for all covered health care providers. While the old UPIN directory was accessible to the public, there is no corresponding NPI directory now available for public use. Federal regulations require the sharing of NPI numbers only among health care providers and entities that need the information for billing purposes.
