Although the deadline for filing IRS Form 1096 changes with each tax year, the deadline for filing the form for tax year 2015 is Feb. 29, 2016, according to the Internal Revenue Service. The IRS publishes the deadline for filing the form in each year’s iteration of instructions.
Tax-exempt organizations use Form 1096, Annual Summary and Transmittal of U.S. Information Returns, for reporting 1099s, W-2Gs and other forms that they issue to non-employees or independent contractors during the tax year, advises the IRS. Organizations must use a separate Form 1096 for each specific form type. For example, the IRS requires a 1096 for all 1099s issued and a separate 1096 for all W-2Gs issued.
