What is a PRN position?

A PRN position is held by an “as needed” caregiver. PRN stands for the Latin phrase “pro re nata” and translates to mean “as the situation demands."

As of 2014, PRN positions are budgeted positions that are often considered temporary employment. Employees who work in PRN positions are not eligible for most employment benefits, such as paid time off, life insurance and medical health plans. In lieu of benefits, some employers offer increased wages to PRN employees. Hospitals and other health care jobs utilize PRN employees and often have a pool of PRN employees available to fill staffing needs as they arise. PRN jobs are also known as per diem jobs.
