At a hotel, a porter greets guests at the door, offers to carry their luggage, and fills in at the front desk when needed, among other duties. Those who enjoy providing excellent customer service are well suited to the position.
There are no technical skills required to become a porter, according to National Careers Service. However, it helps to be physically fit, neat in appearance, patient, friendly, and knowledgeable of the hotel's premises and vicinity. Many hotels require their porters to complete various ancillary tasks such as making reservations, answering phones, picking up dry cleaning and answering general guest questions.
