A Veteran Health Identification card is a card that is issued to military veterans who are enrolled in the health care program provided by the Department of Veterans Affairs in the United States. To enroll in the health care program, a veteran needs to send an annual application.
As of February 2015, the cost of prescription and co-pays on the VA health care program is generally lower than similar programs offered by Medicare or private insurance. The VHIC is also used to verify the identity of the patient as they check in for appointments under the VA program. The card is not usable in facilities that are not affiliated with the VA.
