A person who lives to be 100 is a centenarian. In 1980, there were 32,000 centenarians in the United States, but the number grew to over 52,000 by 2010, an increase of over 65 percent, while the general population grew by 32 percent.

People who live to age 100 are generally women who live in urban areas. Of those who reach age 100, only one of 1,000 reaches 110. These people are super centenarians. Only 34 people in recorded history have reached a confirmed age of 115 as of 2014. The President of the United States traditionally sends a letter of congratulations to citizens who reach this age.
