Where is the cam position sensor located in a vehicle?

The cam position sensor is often located under the timing chain cover, which is near the front of the car engine. The sensor may be near the cylinder head.
At the end of the crankshaft, vehicles have a toothed wheel, which helps the sensor count the movement. The cam position sensor is typically lined up with this toothed wheel. In this position, the sensor is able to gather information about the rotation of the camshaft and send that information to the computer that controls the engine. Symptoms of a problem in the cam position sensor include difficulty starting the car, the engine misfiring or dying, and the check engine light illuminating.
