Where is the camshaft position sensor on a GM vehicle?

Depending on the make, model and year of the vehicle, the camshaft position sensor is located in various places. It can be found in the distributor, on or behind the timing cover, directly on the engine block (GM 3.1/3.4 liter engines) or behind the crankshaft pulley.
A CMP normally serves the function of fine-tuning the timing for fuel injection and ignition. Various names are used to describe this part, such as pickup coil, magnetic pulse generator and Hall Effect sensor, but they normally fall into two categories: 3-wire or 2-wire design. The two specific designs make repair easier regardless of which engine is being serviced.
