The IRS website also has a W-2 that can be downloaded and printed, but it is not in the optically scannable format and therefore may not be used for federal reporting. It may, however, be used for reporting to state and local jurisdictions or for information-only reporting to employees. The IRS warns that a penalty may be imposed for federal filing of non-scannable forms. OfficeMax and other office supply retailers also sell blank W-2 forms in the IRS-approved format.
