Employers who hire employees to perform a work or service, and pays them for that service, must provide the employee a W-2 form at the end of the tax year and report the wages earned to the IRS, explains the agency. Any withholding for income tax, Medicare tax and Social Security tax, as well as other payments made on behalf of the employee, must be reported on the W-2 form.
