Free printable W-2 forms are available on the official website for the Internal Revenue Service. These forms are not scannable and may not be used to file with the SSA, according to the IRS. Employers must only file the official IRS pre-printed Copy A forms.

Employers can call the IRS at 800-TAX-FORM or visit the online ordering portal to order pre-printed W-2 forms through the mail, instructs the IRS. Penalties are assessed for filing improper W-2 forms that cannot be scanned. Employers filing paper forms must distribute employee copies of form W-2 by January 31st of the following year and file Copy A with the IRS before the end of February, explains the official Social Security website. Electronic filers must file before March 31st.
