The scanners come either preprogrammed or can purchase them with the ability to be programmed to pick up specific scan ranges. The preprogrammed scanners are able to simply be turned on and immediately pick up the local channels. Many scanners have GPS options for people that travel. This gives travelers the option to pick up the channels for the area that a traveler is in making it easier to pick up fire and police reports.
