Phenylephrine provides temporary relief of stuffy nose, sinus and ear symptoms caused by the common cold, sinusitis, bronchitis, flu or allergies, states WebMD. Phenylephrine lessens discomfort of these symptoms by decreasing swelling in the nose and ears. Do not give phenylephrine to children who are under 6 years unless specifically directed by a doctor, as phenylephrine and other cold and cough medicines are not shown to be safe or effective for young children.
