In 1962, Toronto pharmacist Murray Koffler opened the first Shoppers Drug Mart. He also created the associate concept that allows pharmacists to own independent businesses with Shoppers Drug Mart corporate support. As of May 2015, Shoppers Drug Mart is the largest drugstore retailer in Canada.

Loblaw Companies Limited purchased Shoppers Drug Mart in 2014 for $12.4 billion in stocks and cash, and there are currently over 1,240 store locations throughout Canada.
