Can cats get parvo?

Cats cannot get parvo, or parvovirus. Cats do get a virus that is similar in nature to parvo in dogs, called panleukopenia, commonly known as feline distemper.

Symptoms of panleukopenia are fever, vomiting, diarrhea and seizures, and it is fatal in kittens that have not been vaccinated against it. Treatment includes giving fluids intravenously until vomiting and diarrhea subside, then giving the cat a bland diet in small portions. Antibiotics are given to prevent bacterial infections but not viral infections.

The panleukopenia virus is spread through contact with feces and urine of infected cats. Fleas can also spread the virus. The virus remains in a cat's system for six weeks after the cat recovers.
