Uric acid is a chemical that is produced when the body breaks down purines, which are found in certain foods and drinks.

A normal level of uric acid in the blood ranges from 3.5 to 7.2 milligrams per deciliter, notes MedlinePlus. Doctors may request uric acid tests if patients have chronic gouty arthritis, chronic kidney disease or injury to the kidney or ureter. Patients may also need their uric acid levels tested prior to chemotherapy because the rapid weight loss that sometimes results can cause uric acid levels to rise.
