College basketball referees working in Division 1 of the National Collegiate Athletic Association can earn up to $250,000 per season. They are expected to cover their own costs of insurance, although transportation and accommodation are paid for.

Refereeing college basketball is described as a demanding job. Often a single referee will work up to 14 consecutive nights. Referees with a good reputation are sought after by college basketball coaches to officiate in their games.

At the high school level of basketball, by way of comparison, referees are reported to earn around $8,000 to $9,000 per season, representing a fairly lucrative and often rewarding second job.
