Paperless credit card statements reduce tree consumption, according to Nasdaq. Although many customers opt to receive both electronic and traditional hard copy statements, some banks encourage customers to go completely paperless by promoting environmentally friendly initiatives such as Citi's Plant-a-Tree program. In the first quarter of 2007, the company planted over 300,000 trees to represent the number of customers who switched to paperless statements.
