Dogs cannot get the herpes virus from humans, according to WebMD. Canine Herpes Virus, also known as "fading puppy syndrome," lives in an adult dog's reproductive and respiratory systems. It is transmitted through aerosol droplets in the air, or through direct contact with infected dogs, according to the ASPCA.
Canine Herpes Virus, or CHV, is common, according to the ASPCA. While the infection in adult dogs is usually mild, CHV causes stillbirths in pregnant adult dogs and high mortality rates in puppies under three weeks of age. The ASPCA recommends isolating bred females during the final weeks of pregnancy and puppies under three weeks of age from other dogs that are not the mother to prevent exposure.
