Can dogs take ibuprofen?

Ibuprofen is not typically prescribed to dogs and can actually be poisonous to them, according to the Pet Poison Helpline. Common signs that a dog has consumed ibuprofen include behavior changes, reduced dietary intake, redness of skin and tarry stool.

Ibuprofen, a NSAID safe for humans, is not used by veterinarians, according to WebMD. Other NSAIDs, made specifically for dogs, are much safer, and they include carprofen, deracoxib and meloxicam. Severe side effects may result from a dog's consumption of an NSAID, including death, warns the Pet Poison Helpline. If a dog may have consumed ibuprofen, contact a veterinarian or a poison control center immediately for treatment advice.
