Can you drywall over brick?

Drywall can be installed over brick using two methods: fastening directly to the brick with adhesive or screws, or to a wood or steel frame attached to the wall. In choosing a method, the condition of the wall must be considered.
Before fastening drywall panels directly to brick, a wall may need leveling with mortar. Fastening drywall to uneven bricks results in cracked panels. Brick must also be prepared with polyvinyl acetate (PVA) before adhesive can stick. A framing wall, which is attached to the brick wall with mortar screws, provides a level, even surface for drywall mounting. It requires construction, and is an additional expense, but may be the best solution.
