Wild American ginseng can be grown in nearly any moist location with well-drained soil and 75 to 80 percent afternoon shade. Lattices may be used to filter direct sunlight in areas without tree cover.

Sandy loam makes an ideal ginseng bed, particularly if it is located beneath overstory that filters sunlight but allows air flow. A sloped bed aids drainage.

Wild American ginseng naturally grows under deciduous forests in the Eastern United States. Because it is rare, home gardeners often cultivate it from harvested plants. Although harvesting is legal as of 2014, a number of states restrict digging. Responsible harvesting practices include planting only mature seeds and allowing seedlings to remain in their natural environments.
