Can hedgehogs eat dry cat food?

If commercial hedgehog food is unavailable, hedgehogs can subsist on low-fat dry cat food. Cat food should be supplemented with a variety of fresh foods, such as vegetables, fruits, cooked meats and certain insects.

Hedgehogs are classified as insectivores, but are opportunistic eaters. They spend much of their time In the wild foraging for food. Their diet should consist of good-quality protein, low levels of fat and approximately 15 percent fiber. Their primary source of fiber comes from the exoskeleton of insects. Commercial hedgehog foods contain this protein, called chitin. Hedgehogs are typically fed between 2 and 4 tablespoons of food per day.
