The hedgehog eats insects and was once classified as an insectivore. It also eats small reptiles and amphibians, eggs, mushrooms, roots and some fruits, including berries.

The hedgehog is a small round animal noted for its short quills, which are made out of keratin. It's usually between 4 to 12 inches long and can weigh between 5 ounces and 3 1/2 pounds. The hedgehog usually lives between three and eight years in the wild and a couple of years longer in captivity. In the wild, the hedgehog lives in a burrow that it digs with strong, clawed feet.

Hedgehogs can be docile, and many people keep them as pets.
