Do hedgehogs bite?

Hedgehogs are not known for biting, but they do have teeth and can bite. When scared, they usually opt to curl into a ball rather than bite. They have fairly small teeth designed for eating insects, and they can't cause much damage.
Hedgehogs that have been handled frequently while young are more likely to become tame and enjoy being held by people. Tame hedgehogs like to be carried and fed treats, but they may bite when uncomfortable or stressed. Hedgehogs typically dislike having their heads petted; the rest of their body is covered with spines, so petting is not enjoyable for people. Handle hedgehogs frequently with clean hands to reduce the risk of being bitten.
