Although ibuprofen does not cause the same high as many other types of drugs, it can become habit-forming even at regular doses and can cause patients to develop a dependency on it, according to Drugs.com. Ibuprofen is prescribed to provide pain relief, and works by reducing the immune responses that result in pain, fever and inflammation. Ibuprofen is typically prescribed for short periods of time.
To prevent developing a dependency, do not take ibuprofen for longer than prescribed. If a dosage is missed, skip it. Do not double dose.
Symptoms of ibuprofen overdose include black or bloody stools, extreme drowsiness, vomiting, nausea, jaundice and confusion.
