Can you insure a car that is not registered to you?

In most cases, a car can be insured by one person while registered to another. This is done by adding the car to an existing auto insurance policy.
The policyholder must provide the car's vehicle identification number, generally found on a plate at the bottom of the windshield. This process is often followed by parents who insure a vehicle for their child while putting the vehicle registration itself in the child's name. The driving record, age and type of vehicle help determine the insurance rates and premiums. Often, a vehicle can be added to an existing policy over the telephone.
