Cholesterol charts are available at Mayo Clinic to help understand LDL values. LDL cholesterol values are measured as milligrams of cholesterol per deciliter, explains Mayo Clinic.
The optimum value for LDL cholesterol is less than 100 milligrams per deciliter, according to Mayo Clinic. Values between 130 to 159 milligrams per deciliter are considered borderline high, while values greater than 160 milligrams per deciliter are considered high.
High LDL levels increase the risk of heart disease because this type of cholesterol builds up on the walls of arteries. Doctors recommend medication - such as statins - when LDL levels rise higher than 190 milligrams per deciliter, explains WebMD.
