A list of failed banks from the years 2000 to 2015 is available at Bankrate.com. This site features a map that includes each state and their failed banks. This site also hosts a list of failed banks for each year from 2009 to 2014.

Site visitors can click on their state and view a list of the banks, the date that each closed and the estimated cost to the Deposit Insurance Fund, or DIF. The DIF backs up the Federal Deposit Insurance Corp’s promise to reimburse consumers.

Bank failure occurs when a bank can no longer meet its obligations to depositors. A bank typically fails when the market value of its assets is less than the value of its liabilities.
